Typhoon Yolanda devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly in Leyte and Eastern Samar, damaging 90% of the school infrastructures in the region. In response, JIZF focused their advocacy to rebuild schools, leading them to form a local core group of builders to construct nine schools inTacloban and one in Maguindanao.
With the help of CEO Mica F. Tan of MFT Group of Companies and Ateneo De Manila University was able to complete the construction of Doña Brigida Elementary School in three months. This is in line with the group’s 100 Schools program which focuses on helping to solve the nation’s recurring problem on large gap in student-classroom ratio, plaguing the increase of classroom shortage.
MFT Group of Companies has helped build and re-build the following schools:
1. San Roque Elementary School- Tolosa, Leyte 2. Tolosa National High School- Tolosa, Leyte 3. Tolosa School of Fisheries- Tolosa, Leyte
4. Cogon Elementary School- Baasey, Samar
5. Cogon Elementary School Annex- Basey, Samar
6. Surok Elementary School- Guiuan, Eastern Samar
7. Tudok-Mamot Elementary School- Upi, Maguindanao
Mica F. Tan of MFT Group of Companies, together with He Cares Foundation, a Christian non-profit organization that works to alleviate the suffering of poor street children in metropolitan Manila by providing clothing, food, education, medical assistance, and spiritual support. Its mission is twofold: First is to help street children find permanent residences so that they may lead safe, healthy lives. Second, to encourage street children to form personal relationships with God.
Founded by full-time lay missionaries Joe Dean Sola and his wife, Ardis, in 1996, the foundation manages five major programs. These include the Balik-Loob sa Diyos (Back to God), Balik-Kalusugan (Back to Health), Balik-Bahay (Back to Home), Balik-Aral (Back to School), and Balik-Hanapbuhay (Back to Work) Programs.
Currently, MFT Group is contributing to support a total of 100 High School and College Scholars by covering tuition and travel expenses for each student through MFT Group’s “100 Scholars Program”.
